I think we can officially say that Chad Muska has gone nuts. You’ve all seen his new Shorty’s ad with the wallride? The wallride is just fine, although it probably doesn’t justify a two-page ad like a some photos of Muska from a few years ago probably still could. But here’s the evidence that Muska has truly gone mad:
1. The pants. Painted jeans?
2. The t-shirt in the pocket. Seems to me that would be really annoying while you’re skating.
3. The weight gain. There’s no doubt Chad’s put on a few pounds. Double chin, soft arms, etc. You can tell he hasn’t been skating as much just by looking at the guy.
4. The lack of coverage. When’s the last time you saw video or magazine coverage of Muska other than in the Shorty’s vid or the Shorty’s ad?
5. LA. Why does Muska have LA on his graphics. Isn’t he from Vegas originally? I could be wrong on that one.
6. Smoking pot. Yeah, I know a lot of you kids do it. Some of you can’t live without it, but ultimately it will make you not care as much about skating and you’ll quit because you just don’t care and lack the motivation to do anything but hang out and get nicely toasted. I’ve seen it happen before. The pot leaf on his deck makes me think Muska has traded skateboarding every day for smoking weed and eating at buffets. Notice the glazed look in his eyes.
7. Nikes. Is Muska really riding for Nike now? In that ad he’s wearing a bit ol’ pair of Nike high-tops. Untied, like he’s some rapper from the 80s.
Anyway, this stuff happens all the time. Some pro gets really big, makes a lot of money, then stops skating while still thinking kids will buy his board, and soon the kids have forgotten who he is, then he tries to make a comeback but everyone is thinking “Who’s this old, fat guy who everyone is making a big deal about?” It’s like George Lazenby, the only James Bond actor to ever do the role just once. He figured after landing the James Bond role that he was a big star, so after the first movie he took a trip on a sailboat for a year or something. When he got back they had already replaced him with someone else. You can’t take this pro status for granted, or it’ll be gone before you know it. Dyrdek knows what’s up.
Rats, I have to write more stuff for this post or the board graphic gets cut off and ruins the design. This keeps happening, and I don’t think there’s any way around it but to put in more text. Maybe a little poem will do:
Chad Muska used to rip,
But I haven’t seen him for a while,
He used to have a mean frontside flip,
And skating anything he was pure style,
Now he sits around smoking weed,
He made a wad of cash and is in the black,
Watching TV and eating at high speed,
He’s gotten fat but watch for the comeback.

I think that wallride sequence is two sequences stitched together. Compare frames 9 and 10: he’s too near the phone box in frame 10, and the angle + shape of the wall in the background is completely different. Swizz!
I don’t think you can say muska’s gone “officially” nuts. For one thing, when you’ve done as much on a skateboard as he has, it’s probably not as challenging as it once was. The weed thing – muska has ALWAYS smoked tons of weed, his shoe on es was the first one to have a stash pocket for that specific reason. Say what you will about weed, but most of the crazy stuff he’s done was done while he was high. I doubt it’s even an issue to him. He’s living the hollywood lifestyle, more into fashion, less into skating, people have different interests at some point.
I’ve skated with muska a few times when i lived in san diego in 96, and seen him in LA and SF, where i currently live, pretty recently. He’s always been a super down to earth guy who never took what he had for granted, maybe due to his rugged upbringing. This pseudo-celebrity bashing seems pointless, neither you or i have been in the muska’s shoes and gone through what he’s gone through, good and bad. It’s lame to sit on the sidelines and ref out. No one can stay on top forever, and alot of the stuff he did will never be duplicated. Kids nowadays i’m sure don’t care one way or the other, lots of them started skating after he was already not that into it. I just don’t think it’s right to post that muska has officially gone nuts. You’re definitely reading too much into his fashion and board graphics… He lives in LA, so he’s reppin’ where he’s at, who cares if he’s originally from vegas?
Who cares anyways? The muska will always be the muska, dude crooked grinded handrails with a boombox in hand. He can do whatever he wants.

If you want the real story go read the Muska interview in the January 2006 issue of Thrasher. I still think it confirms that Muska is crazy, but hilarious. Here are some classic quotes that are so Muska:

Muska is the best skater in my opinion. He’s the whole reason I skate and I’m sure he’s the whole reason why a lot of people skate. Muska is his own person and I’m sure he doesn’t care if it’s good enough for you. The true fans, like myself & probably some of you, will always stand by Chad.
Granted, Muska’s made quite a comeback since 2005, when this posting was made, although I think the shoes Supra is putting out for him still qualify him as being a bit loopy.
pot is what keeps me skating.. wouldn’t be able to do it without it.. and as for the la and the potleaf its a medical marijuana thing moron.. which is legal in that state… get a life before you talk trash
