Hey, my first issue of Thrasher. Man, I don’t think I’ve had a subscription to Thrasher since around ‘93 or so. My favorite page in a Thrasher ever was the poem about the knight and the giant hamburger. If anyone has that poem send it on over.
Do you remember where you were when you realized that there are skaters out there who can skate switch better than you can skate regular? Sometimes I see people do something switch and I think “Yeah, but if I could do that trick at all I could do it looking better than that.” Then you see the Thrasher cover with Paul Rodriguez doing a switch flip to backside 50-50 down a rail and he’s making it look as though he’s skating normal and you think “Man, I’m just plain lame.”
I’ve always liked Steve Berra for some reason. He seems to be more of a “thinking” skater than most. I was a little sad that he quit vert entirely for street–I’d like to see him pulling some vert tricks every once in a while. But at least he’s happy, and that’s what counts. Steve Berra: ollie off ramp to backside smith on loading dock rail to quick backside 180 kickflip off the dock. You can’t say he doesn’t make it look good. Except for that striped shirt. Not sure I like that one.
My favorite part of the mage is the Goin’ Am section. Page 139, Dallas Rockvam. Maybe it’s the angle, but that ollie looks huge. Page 175, Andre Genovesi, switch flip barely clearing that fence. I’d still be there thinking about what would happen if my foot caught on that hours after Andre landed it and left to go to some churrascaria.
Oh, and did I mention the poster of Chris Cole tre-flipping Wallenberg? Yep, it’s real. What gets me is that it was that long ago that it was kickflipped for the first time even though it was ollied by Gonz back in ‘91-92.
