Skateboarding was such a small scene back then compared to now, even in the bigger cities. You were just stoked to find someone else to skate with, you didn’t care how they stood or pushed their board.

Everyone will naturally lead with one particular foot when they first begin to skate, just like they will naturally push with one particular foot. What’s the big deal with that? No matter if you skate regular or goofy or mongo there will always be that one particular way that feels most natural to you.

If you push regular, you will naturally want to push mongo when switch, and vice versa. Of course a pro would have the skill to push and lead with either foot, that is one reason why they are pro, but many pros did start out mongo. Some of the younger pros probably won’t admit it, but ask any of the older dudes and you will get a different answer.

The anti-mongo thing really began to take off in the late 90s, a time when skateboarding was really beginning to get popular. In the early 2000s it became about image. It really didn’t matter how good you were (granted if you could at least do some good tricks), it was all about how cool you looked. Punk, thug, beard-o, what ever. If you had the right look and attitude, you were the shit. Kids look up to that sort of stuff, and want to be like that. When young kids want to be like the pros, they are going to want to skate like the pros, and not many pros are seen doing mongo.

At the end of the day, it is not going to matter as long as you had fun. When you are older, who is going to give a shit? That’s right, no one. And for those of you who are learning to push regular to up the chance of you getting sponsored, well forget about it. Skateboarders are a dime a dozen these days and kids are coming up quick.
