What’s the Best Skateboard Company?

It’s interesting…at least to me…that as time passes different skateboard companies take their turn as the best and biggest company out there. Let’s take a trip down memory lane.

…mid 1980s to 1989 - Powell Peralta. Powell is but a shadow of their former selves today. Powell was the biggest company around back in the 80s. Everyone wanted to be part of the Bones Brigade.

1989-1991 - H-Street. It’s almost unbelievable that the company that brought names like Matt Hensley and Sal Barbier to the forefront of skateboarding is virtually unknown today, as are Matt and Sal by the younger generation. But for a few brief years H-Street was what it was all about. They took skateboarding from it’s squeaky clean image that Powell had created to something more realistic, like having fun with your friends on a curb or a backyard ramp.

1991-1992 - World Industries. World, which included Blind and Plan B, was the biggest thing ever. Steve Rocco took Powell and other companies completely by surprise by making fun of themselves and making cheap jeans. I think even Rocco is surprised how big it all got. They’re still big today, and in some ways bigger than they were back then, but I wouldn’t say they’re on top anymore.

1993-1994 - Girl. Girl signaled a change, in that it was the first big company run by skaters who were still on top of their game, and still are today. Girl could arguably still be one of the best skateboard brands today, but that brings us to our final point.

1995…today - Who is it? Skateboarding is a bit different today. It’s a lot bigger than it has ever been. There are lots of companies. Small companies today that most kids might consider loser companies may be larger and making more money than World Industries back when they were on top. Unlike in the past when it was pretty easy for everyone to agree on which company was the best, today everyone has their favorites. Girl and their affiliated companies are still some of my favorites. What’s yours?

element sucks and is poser. get a bueno or toy machine.

  12. 12 Jordan Apr 15th, 2007 at 7:18 pm

Alright first off I have nothing against the Element/Bam fad but I can only say that the boards are horribly made for skating street. They have a reputation of being extremely heavy and thick which would be good for vert but not street. I havn’t decided yet whats the best board company yet because I havn’t tried them all out yet. Anything light with a good concave will do great. When you shop for a board pick it up and feel it. Place it under your feet if you have to and don’t worry about the graphic because it’s going to come off sooner or later. My favorite brand of shoes so far is Emerica. I usually skate the cheaper low cut shoes like the Reynolds 3 or the Francis. I always skate suede because it holds up the best and it has more board feel. Wheel brands don’t matter to me at all. They are all made out of the same material so why not get blanks. I usually skate a small wheel like 49mm because they are light weight. From what I hear Venture or Silver brand trucks are the best you can get for street. I skate Venture’s but Silver trucks come with nice features. Bearing companys dont matter at all. Just look for what abec you want. The higher abec the faster you will go. But the higher abec the more they wear out. Hardware and riser pads are all the same. I guess you just have to experiment with all these brands until your comfortable. Everyone’s different just like every company’s different.

  13. 13 tzak Jun 12th, 2007 at 4:53 pm

its enjoi for me they have tons of pop and wear slow..
but there are lots of boards and lots of different people

  14. 14 s-town Jun 29th, 2007 at 9:20 pm

jordan i agree with u….element is ight but the fiberlight baord is really bad. it slowly looses its pop and the bard is weak. i enjoy most of all are alien workshop, zoo york, and…umm…blind. dont get me wrong i think element is a good skate company its just that the fiber light board is really…bad.

  15. 15 sk8erhero Jun 29th, 2007 at 9:28 pm

i dont like element too much…but i love alien workshop and chocalate.

as for skate shoes…i enjoy wearin adios and dc when im hangin out but i barely use them for skateing cause…well…they’re expensive and i dont wanna ruin t them, u kno. but as for skateboarding i love to wear vans and sometimes es…they’re really comftorable but wat would i kno i havent tried them all

  16. 16 Matt Jun 29th, 2007 at 10:10 pm

id have to say either element, and girl, i like the feel for world industries but it doesnt give me enough flip, girl gives me a nice feel for its pop and element i just ride most of the time

  17. 17 justin Jul 3rd, 2007 at 1:34 pm

what are you all talkin about element sux blinds and almosts are the best almost impact support and uber lights are the $#%$ remember it

  18. 18 George logakis Jul 11th, 2007 at 2:40 pm

When I first started skating I’d always switch board companies to get a feel for every single thing out there. Some of the best boards had to be GIRL for durability+lightness, CHOCOLATE for ease of pop, flip & stamina(can always land the 3’s easy on those) TOY MACHINE for confidence (yeah for some reason I learned alot of new tricks w/ TM like frontside flips) and…consolidated.

  19. 19 mystrysk8 Jul 16th, 2007 at 11:30 am

i personaly like mystery boards. they have great flip. they also pop pretty good. like many of you are saying element is a good company no doubt but fiber lites are just too easy to break.

  20. 20 king Jul 27th, 2007 at 5:21 pm

I like black label they have a good shape blind almost planb and element to.

  21. 21 xchasex Aug 6th, 2007 at 8:27 pm

Well,i think kids now go with eleemtn, but that honestly only because so many kids look up to bam,i dont personlly, ive riddin an element, idk,i didnt last very long for me.i like birdhouse…alot, espicially the new black 6’s.Enjois are always nice, and of course….BAKER!
but i also like flip, and foundation,i tried a powell, but it lasted like a week?

  22. 22 iceman Aug 15th, 2007 at 8:36 pm

Its Almost for me there got really nice pop and flip well. also they dont wear down fast and them new uber light deck are just sick. other then almost Plan B and Blind are good. and to all you element/Bam loving —- element deck suck and there are better skater then Bam. enjoi suck too.

  23. 23 almostask8a Aug 19th, 2007 at 3:32 pm

i like almost cause they flip real good and there soooooo light.

  24. 24 erin Aug 20th, 2007 at 1:56 am

err……..i had a flip i liked it..i got a cbs rite now(copeland board shop)they cheap but good had it like 2 years but im gettin a new board for my b day.i skate street and i was wonderin wat the best company for street skating is?

  25. 25 oiiiiiii Aug 25th, 2007 at 3:19 am

out of all the decks i skated [zero, death, element, voltage, && zoo york] zero has to be the best.

they are a frikkin lush skate ^^

  26. 26 David Oct 6th, 2007 at 5:02 pm

I’ve skated Element, Baker, Birdhouse, Zero, Zoo York, and Enjoi, and I can tell you right now that Birdhouse is a ok brand but they lose pop and they where out way way too fast so actually, they aren’t a good brand. The tails on baker boards where out too fast and chip, but they are really good for spin and pop, zero will be good to you for about a year, I don’t like Zoo York, And Enjoi has really good pop when you first get it, but in 2 weeks its gone. So I would definetly go Element

  27. 27 Housewrecker Oct 9th, 2007 at 9:02 am

Regarding the main article, I think Element is definitely dominating the market right now. It doesn’t mean they’re the best. It just means they sell the most product. In the 80s Powell , Santa Cruz, and Vision were sooo huge but then in the 90s Blind made a killing with decks that parodied Powell. When skating went under the giant “corporation” type companies couldn’t survive, but the smaller companies (Blind, World) thrived. Except for H-Street, who I really miss - best videos ever.

  28. 28 nacho Oct 14th, 2007 at 4:07 pm

i am thinkin about gettin a chocolate or girl board, but i do not know what to do, i want a board that does not chip easily on the ends.
    Any help?

  29. 29 dorito Oct 20th, 2007 at 9:25 pm

ok, right, ive skated pretty much everything, I tell you right now elements suck the pop wears in like 4 weeks, enjoys are amazing, but they break really easy, almost are pretty good, baker is great, they are really good but they chip easy, i personally like girl boards they really good or zoo york, zero flips amazing but they are soo breakable, a zero will probablly last u about a year or two. but for
” NACHO’S” comment deffinetly go with the girl board

  30. 30 cipolla Oct 24th, 2007 at 6:47 pm

element is the best. everyone else just stop talking. ive skated them all, element has the best pop there durable and they dont really chip. nothing else compares

  31. 31 mel Nov 1st, 2007 at 8:15 pm

zooyork and zero are the best and yes i am a girl but who cares so ya o and i cant for get baker and plan b and no i dont skateboard but i might smeday and alot of my friends do

  32. 32 corey Nov 20th, 2007 at 5:38 pm

ive had a zoo york, baker, mystery, plan b, element and a think board.
my favorites were zoo york, there crisp, with nice pop.
baker is also good but a tad to heavy.
mystery was like a plan b, nothin to exiting.
element are probably the worst waste of money….ciapolla, u must not skate much, cuz after a week at the skatepark my element was trash. i do not recomend element
plan b boards are ok, after a few weeks of treys and rails it was finished
think boards rnt bad either, there kinda like plan b.
im curently skatin a zoo york and i have no complaints

  33. 33 Josh Nov 25th, 2007 at 9:44 am

Well i currently have an almost uber light and its pretty much the best board ive had. Ive only had 3 boards before. My first board was a zero. I dont prefer those. Bakers are good. But they wear out to easily. Girls take a long time to chip but when they do there doomed. Then darkstars are bad@$$. They have good pop and are light. So almost and darkstar are my two favs.

  34. 34 sloan Nov 25th, 2007 at 12:09 pm

I like peralta decks.I have a spaecialty deck from them.its got a load of pop, and is skinny so flip tricks are no problem. also its incredibly light and durable.the only thing thats wrong with it is that it has almost no concave so its like landing on a longboard.my element bam deck is cool to look at but thats just about it.

  35. 35 Dr. lol Nov 26th, 2007 at 5:53 pm

I’ve rode baker, enjoi, element, almost, world industries, speed demons (blank deck) and i have to say that the best one is the baker. It has good pop. My speed demons blank deck has good pop but baker has more. Element is my favorite company though, i have like 10 products of them. Element may not be the best but they sell the best stuff and are more well known.

  36. 36 andrew Dec 10th, 2007 at 10:44 am

i like zoo york i had a flip and its a little heavy and not much pop but the best flip ever! blacklable is my fav!

  37. 37 Nick Dec 23rd, 2007 at 1:01 pm

    I personally favor Almost
i have a impact support and a uber light and they are the best boards i’ve ever had, they have good pop, they flip nice, they are also sooooo light
i’ve ridden an Element,Mystery,Flip, and Darkstar
but my Almost decks are the best

  38. 38 DC Rocks Dec 26th, 2007 at 8:09 pm

I can’t believe you guys haven’t mentioned DC your all posers!

  39. 39 Bryson Dec 28th, 2007 at 8:30 pm

Dc Rocks, or whoever you are, we didnt mention dc because its not a deck brand! Duh! You have to be a poser. My Fav deck brand is PLAN B! SHECKLER, P-ROD, JEREME ROGERS, you cant beat that

  40. 40 BIG CHRIS - L.A. BRED Dec 30th, 2007 at 6:26 pm

Element is for posers who wanna be just like bam.
    Oh yeah, and little kids.
Its about real companies and real pros that do it for the love, not for money or fame.
So whats the best deck brand, true skaters already know, the rest of you posers keep your opinions off the blog and come back when you think you got the answer…

  41. 41 aaron j Jan 5th, 2008 at 3:23 pm

my favorite board company would have to be baker becuase there not heavy and there not light weight there perfectthey have good pop and good concave. my favorite skate shoe would have to be either fallen or Emaricas, Fallens becuase they made for good kickflips especially if there suede they last much longer, and Emaricas becuase there really flexeble and soft on the bottom for hard landing, trucks id go with Thunders becuase there light weight. wheels dont matter there all the same just pick your size and skate them look i do know what im kinda talkin about ive been skatin for about six years so if i were you id at least try outsome of these brands

  42. 42 chloe Jan 9th, 2008 at 11:59 am

Hey im buying my first serious board and im not sure what make i used to have a Renner board but its not that good…. Does any one no if speed demons is a gd make cos iv got my eye on one of ther boards?? and any brand suggestions??? tnks

  43. 43 steven Feb 18th, 2008 at 12:55 am

i still think that enjoi decks are the best brands in the world
    i like teh little pander

  44. 44 Anonymous Feb 20th, 2008 at 11:16 pm

Bryan, i actually have seen a dc deck before but it rides feels and looks exactly that of a walmart board. There are a lot of good brands out there but you know a deck is a deck just because its a name brand doesnt neccasarily always mean its better i suggest going down to your local skate shop and picking one of their decks up for cheaper than you would if you went out and bought a pro deck. Pro models only cost more because thats how they make money so dont think that theyre better cause theyre not.

  45. 45 Shane C. Feb 21st, 2008 at 12:50 am

    element sucks
    toy machine sucks
    world indutries sucks

blck label waz the best but now there china pressed
    id say habitat
blan b or zero r the best brands
but no1 getta world indutries board ull b sorry its like skatin a wal-mart board and u will get made fun of smae 4 element and toymahine
and all u ppl that say pop war iz good
    wtf
there outta buisseness now so u cant find n e

  46. 46 Queeva Feb 26th, 2008 at 6:23 pm

i am buying my second board but dont know what to get i already have a chocolate and wasnt impressed that much i might get an alomost or alien workshop so which should i get and why

  47. 47 inward heelflips suck Mar 3rd, 2008 at 4:23 pm

everyone has a different style of skating.
there’s not really a “best board”.
for instance: the uberlight isn’t really a good board for tre flips. but it’s better for nollie tricks.
element, chocolate, plan b, blind, zero, flip, almost, and zoo yorks seem the same to me. they all have ok pop but they all lose their tails around the same time; like in a few months.
but so far, i like enjoi and alien workshop the most

  48. 48 beatbox Mar 3rd, 2008 at 9:22 pm

the new daewon og impact or any impact board is pretty good
its got a good pop, good concave, just a good board
and almost has impacts with diffrent sizes so even the big guys could get one

  49. 49 SubGenius Mar 7th, 2008 at 12:24 pm

You guys are all smokin’ too much dope. The best brands out there are by far:

Alien Workshop, Almost, Santa Monica Airlines, Old Man Army, Skaterbuilt, Gravity, Deckcrafters.

Most of the brands you kooks list above are China made junk.

    Get with American Made!

  50. 50 andy Mar 8th, 2008 at 1:39 pm

    lol almost is china pressed

  51. 51 sk8 or die Mar 17th, 2008 at 4:11 pm

    alien workshop is awsome….ROB DYRDEK!!!!!!!!

  52. 52 bry348 Mar 21st, 2008 at 2:43 pm

i like kryptonics because they have very smooth wheels an a thin deck and they ollie so easy

  53. 53 sean Mar 23rd, 2008 at 4:23 pm

Dude PLLLLAAAANNNN BBBBB powns alll of uuuuu

  54. 54 xxxdiequieltyxxx Mar 25th, 2008 at 7:09 am

    GIRL no doubts about it

  55. 55 (noah) Mar 25th, 2008 at 6:00 pm

the almost uberlight made me disappointed. it has more pop than any other board i have ever had, but it lost its pop in a month. BIG BIG BIG waste of money. it takes a couple days to get used to, but when you do, u’ll love it. it has been my favorite board so far, but i didnt like that it lost its pop in the same amount of time as any other board. tre flips/3 flips (whatever you call it) are all you have to do and it’ll be destroyed in about 2 months. but overall, its a great board. besides the uberlight, i would have to recommend enjoi. it has good pop and it lasts you a while. enjoi and alien workshop. im rockin tha panda and alien!!

  56. 56 oliver Mar 25th, 2008 at 9:53 pm

I am currently skating a Enjoi deck. I like it alot that pop is great and i like the decals. I am going to buy a girl board

  57. 57 NACHCO Mar 27th, 2008 at 10:15 am

wht abt dgk are those good they dnt break easy and flips have nice pop but u can break them on a 5 or 8 stair if u mess up or land to hard

  58. 58 Eric Mar 27th, 2008 at 4:44 pm

Zoo York def. It kills the poser and sellout brands.

  59. 59 tyrell Mar 27th, 2008 at 9:23 pm

element is terrible for street skating, its only good for vert. if you skate street alot like me, i prefer baker, alien workshop, plan B,zero,or darkstar. if you’re more flat ground, get almost or toy machine (great concave & flip).Blind is good all around in my opinion.enjoi is too stiff for me.comfort comes before looks or however that saying goes lol. so dont just get a deck because it looks awesome.

  60. 60 Ryan Sheckler Mar 31st, 2008 at 4:24 am

Element sucks! I tried and tried to do a heel flip and pop-shove it. I couldn’t do it on my element. But I got a Zero deck and on my first try’ I did a heel flip AND a pop shove it. My Zero deck weighs like nothing dude! My element weighs like 50 pounds!

    ,PEACE!

  61. 61 Sk8er Mar 31st, 2008 at 4:43 am

    Element Sucks!
    World Industries Suck!
    Toy Machine Suck!

Zero, Plan B and Globe are the best brands! All the other boards are China made crap! Zero decks are so awesome! Same with Plan B and Globe! Flip is also good too but, I don’t like it too much. If I would buy a skateboard, I would see if the brand is good not just if has awesome colored trucks, barrings, wheels or deck. All the other boards are a waste of money! You should get Zero, Plan B or Globe! Zero has the best pop of all the 7 boards I got. It also last long! It hasn’t got a scratch for 7 months. Except for the scratches I made from board sliding and manuals.

  62. 62 ^^^^Sk8er is a poser Mar 31st, 2008 at 5:26 pm

okay Sk8er. u are definetly a poser. i dont know u but judging by your comment, i realize that u dont know much. globe makes shoes. not boards. and okay if u say zero didnt get scratched for 7 months u must be stupid or smokin somethin. and if it got scratches from manuals than i guess u didnt manual because a manual requires 2 wheels off the ground; not scraping the ground. and i snapped my zero in 2 months. element is light and it has a alot of pop, but it dont last long so yea it does suck and world industries also sucks big time but toy machine is amazing i dont know wat the — ur talkin about. and one last thing. i have colored griptape, trucks, and hardware but that doesnt mean that they arent good. decks arent bad just because they have a cool graphic.

  63. 63 Mike Apr 2nd, 2008 at 4:21 pm

    http://www.oldmanarmy.com

Made in the good ol US of A.

  64. 64 SK8ER Apr 5th, 2008 at 4:48 am

    ELEMENT SUCKS!
    TOY MACHINE SUCKS!
    DGK SUCKS!

IF YOU REALLY WANT A NEW BOARD, YOU SHOULD GET A BLIND, ETERNAL LIFE BOARD. ETERNAL LIFE LAST FOR AT LEAST 10 YEARS. I’VE BEEN BOARD SLIDDING FOR 9 YEARS STRAIGHT, EVERY DAY FOR AT LEST 1 HOUR A DAY! AND MY BOARD STILL HASN’T SNAPPED! BLIND, INTERNAL LIFE KICKS ALL THE OTHER BRANDS ALL THE BACK FOR IMPROVMENT!

  65. 65 ElementLover Apr 11th, 2008 at 6:45 pm

Stop Hating People Element Is good And Durable It may not be the best some things but i dont hate on other companys they all have something good about them

  66. 66 surusskate Apr 14th, 2008 at 4:43 pm

ok the ting is element isnt good unless your a starter, kids that skate stop worrying about your weight of board and —-. all you need is a board with good pop like an enjoi, chocolate, girl, krooked. with some indys and spitfires. risers help reduce stress cracks and do work if you get flexible squishy ones.

  67. 67 costa2193 Apr 18th, 2008 at 8:01 pm

i agree with all of yall but i ride Real’s, plan B’s , and girl boards.

thay’re the —-. elements are alright, but they wear out way to fast. alien workshop has got some mad pop and concave though

  68. 68 eoooo Apr 20th, 2008 at 10:13 am

    PLAN B—ALMOST—BLIND—

  69. 69 ten Apr 23rd, 2008 at 9:06 am

u guys are so weird . birdhouse is the best. it has awesome pop and awesome graphics. dont forget the awesome team. tony hawk shaun white, etc…..ELEMENT SUCKS. jk i nvr rode one

  70. 70 ten Apr 23rd, 2008 at 9:07 am

    bird house is the beeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeest

  71. 71 Anonymous Apr 25th, 2008 at 4:39 pm

blacklable by far the best in the industry today their boards are plain and have a nice feel wen u ride them and they are very durable and an extreme amount of pop

  72. 72 Anonymous Apr 29th, 2008 at 6:31 pm

I’ve been skateboarding for about five years and i hav to say that the best boards are:
Girl: for lightness and ease of riding on bumpy areas and doing flip tricks
    Zero: for hard landings
Habitat: for lightness and nice pops

  73. 73 BrokeBaller May 3rd, 2008 at 3:14 pm

    Mini Logo Blanks all day…

  74. 74 noah May 5th, 2008 at 3:31 pm

right now im skatin a blank. why? cuz it was $20 fricken dollars and it has just as much pop as any other pro deck. and every board seems the same to me. they all have a different feel, but they all have the same amount of pop, and they wear down the pop in about the same amount of time. after 2 months, just about every board has NO pop. and the almost uberlight snapped on me after about 2 weeks. so that carbon fiber crap is worthless. elements are super light and they have good pop, but they lose all their pop quicker than ANY OTHER BOARD! trust me ive had 4. but ive tried almost every pro deck out there: popwar, enjoi, zero, blind, chocolate, flip, dgk, almost, birdhouse, blacklabel, powell, mystery, habitat, alien workshop, plan b, baker, atm, girl, and organika and they all feel similar. so out of every board ive ever had or skated, i have to suggest blank decks. they have good pop and theyre way cheaper. but the best pro deck i would have to say is enjoi. they last long. and im only 13, but ive been skatin for 2 years and i can already land 3 flips, double kickflips, fs flips, varial heelflips, and fakie big flips so im not some poser that judges boards by their graphic.

  75. 75 Jake May 12th, 2008 at 3:50 pm

ZERO company rocks. end of story.

  76. 76 Austin May 13th, 2008 at 3:20 pm

I currently have a world industries ive had it for like 4 months and it chips really easy and is shaped kinda funny and flip tricks are kinda difficult to do on it but i can ollie pretty high on it i would recomend it for vert if anything but not street. I recently ordered a element Bam Helium deck im hopin that it will be very light so i can ollie extremely high but i think it will wear and break easily im almost thinking i made a bad decision buying that.

I agree with you all acutually. Although, i really enjoy the plan B and Blacklabel. I recommend blacklabel for new skaters because of the prices r cheap and they are excellent boards. I skate Plan B because of the flip and endurance of their graphics and wheels espeicilly. I usually like to skate different brands them my friends and also, Plan B i learned to hardflip on, 360 flip and imposible so yeahh.

Ok. See Element is good I have one and everthing but its old so I don’t use it anymore. So then I bought a Baker board and to me if you are a starter don’t go with Element. Element is really heavy because even I have trouble and I’ve been skating for a while. When I tried my Baker board I was like WTF its so much lighter. Seriously don’t get Element begginners.
