It’s best not to think about it

“The worst enemy of skating is thinking. Any time you start thinking about anything, you should probably give up or stop because thinking is the worst thing you could possibly do while you’re skateboarding. It’s better to be as dumb as you possibly can while you’re trying a trick.”

This is one of the most insightful and true comments I’ve heard about how to be a successful skateboarder.

I’ve had two seriously broken arms, innumerable twisted ankles, scrapes, and bruises. In almost every case, it seems like I got hurt not because I was going full-bore and trying to really land something, but because I was holding back, trying to stay safe, and thinking too much about what I was doing and how it was going to really hurt if I didn’t land the trick.

Then I’d see people who would just jump on a rail or down some stair like it was nothing, and I’d think “How come I’m the careful one and I always get hurt, while the reckless guy has no problems?”

It’s true that you’re not safe from harm just because you have no fear and don’t hesitate, but I’m convinced you’ll get hurt less and have more fun if you can stop thinking and go into automatic mode when you’re trying a trick. The time to think is before you do the trick. Learn how to visualize. Then learn how to commit. Then don’t think, just do.

yeah, like when you don’t think your gonna make it, your not. You should just focus on the matter at hand, like when i wanna kickflip, i just think “kickflip” and thats it, the rest is just a natural reaction.

go full force, haha you can’t be a @#%@# when it comes to rails.
when i skate i usually just visualize the trick first then i just throw my self at whatever im trying
