How to Get Sponsored - Lesson #3

posted May 05, 2008 under get sponsored

Ok, so you've had the patience for Lesson #1 and Lesson #2, but Lesson #3 will be longer than War and Peace with twice as many characters involved.

Lesson #3 = It's all about who you know.

If you think you can just send in a video to Girl and they'll put you on the team, you're setting yourself up for some disappointment. Now if you're really, really good, and you're not an idiot but in fact a real cool guy, and you hang out with the Girl team all the time, and those guys are like your best friends and invite you to their wedding receptions, then maybe, maybe, MAYBE!, you've got a shot at being sponsored. Maybe. But probably not. They'll probably put you on Skate Mental and tell you it's like wanting to be on Zero but being put on Mystery instead, and when you ask "Wouldn't Chocolate be to Girl like Mystery is to Zero?" then they'll pat you on the back and say "Just hang out with Brad for a while, you'll see."

But seriously, you've got to have connections. And getting Steve Berra to accept you as a friend on Facebook doesn't count.

number one is obvious. number two, well it doesn't seem to be true what with all the idiots riding professionally these days (insert sheckler insult here). Number three, well it is probably true but just sad. Skateboarding should be the exception to the connection rule. It should be the one place in this world where you are judged on skill alone, not on whose --- you kiss the best. Alas, it is true, and I doubt there is a single industry out there that really judges on skill. If only my dad were tony hawk...

For all the kids in SLC we are going to have a "sponsor me" contest for our shop. The winner will get a Lenitech shop sponsorship which means a free deck every month, free wheels every three months, a store discount, and we will pay all contest entry fees. We can also help you get hooked up with the local skate reps that will help you get an amateur sponsorship. Come to the store to find out more. 201 South 1300 East next to the U
