It’s simple. In honor of Girl’s new DVD box set coming out I’m having my web design company put up $1,000 to the person who can best duplicate Guy Mariano’s part in Mouse. Read on for the details and buy the Girl DVD box set at Unicron.
I’ve been a fan of Guy Mariano ever since Ban This came out. Guy was “that little guy” who you knew had the potential to become the skateboarding superstar of tomorrow. Video Days established Guy as not just an up-and-comer, but an innovator, and his part in Mouse cemented him in the world of skateboarding as a legend. If you need any proof of that, I present to you the fact that he hasn’t put out more than a few clips of footage in ten years and yet he’s still one of the most talked about skaters, and has any “comeback” been more anticipated? What video from what shoe company is going to be video of the year in 2007? Who will have the most anticipated part in said video, despite Koston being in it? That’s right.
If you watch Guy’s part in Mouse, which was filmed over ten years ago, you’ll see tricks that to this day haven’t been duplicated, or if they have been, nobody has done them as well. I’ve always thought that somebody should sponsor a contest to see if anyone can duplicate Guy’s Mouse part, because it would show everyone how far ahead of his time Guy really was, and I’ve often said to myself that I’d be willing to put up a grand just to see people try. Well, I guess I’m finally putting my money where my mouth is. And with the box set coming out and Guy’s recent return to killing it I think it’s the perfect time.
Granted, a grand isn’t all that much, but it’s the best I can do (c’mon, I only make $20/month off the advertising on this website). Hopefully some other people (Girl Skateboard Co., I’m looking your direction) will be willing to up the ante and make this more interesting, and maybe we can have some prizes for runner-up categories, like Best Guy Mariano Look Alike or something. Of course anyone who could duplicate Guy’s part would probably be able to get picked up by the sponsor of their choice, so if a grand isn’t enough for you, chew on that.
Contest Rules:
1. Deadline: To be announced. A few months at least. Who knows, it might take a year to get any submissions that are valid.
2. Valid submissions. I’m not doing this so that I can get 100 videos of kids doing slow tricks on 2 inch high curbs. I’m going to exercise my right to say that none of the submissions is valid if nobody can come close to doing even just one trick. That might sound harsh, but on the other side of things, if anyone can handle just a few of Guy’s tricks and do them well, that might be enough to win. Thanks to Altered for compiling a comprehensive list of all Guy’s tricks in Mouse.
3. Judging to be done by yours truly, unless Girl contacts me and wants to take over the contest.
4. You don’t have to duplicate his part exactly. Some of the spots are non-existent or unskateable today. It’s all about who can do the best job, and you can probably find spots that are at least somewhat comparable where you live. That said, I’ll be more impressed if you actually make the effort to search out the same spots, so the SoCal kids are going to have a definite advantage, as they always have when it comes to skate spots.
5. To enter the contest, post your footy on YouTube and then post a comment here with a link.
Any questions? Then get on it and git ‘er done. I want to see people switch frontside-shoving to switch crooks on handrails. Yeah, you have to do that trick too.

such a bummer……like someone repainting a masterpiece……lame
I would say more like an orchestra playing Beethoven’s 9th…..awesome.
The idea isn’t to cover up what Guy accomplished, it’s to bring attention to it and help people understand how far ahead of his time his part in Mouse was. Sometimes you don’t appreciate the genius of a masterpiece until you try to duplicate it.
This al would work if you had a time machine to go back to old spots with, The feeling of 1995 is gone. That was the purest of skateboarding days on the street. No knobs, bikers, or bs. Just guy throwing down switch tre’s down sets in runs
if someone can duplicate that section then im sure there allready hooked up . if say twenty people duplicated your section for a grand i reckon you would be pissed off you should personally just give the money guy mariano !
quality idea!! it’s a unique format and it’s a process needing skill. I hope many rise up to the challenge
p.s. you’ve probably all seen this link but it explains itself with the skill
Here are the compulsories, next stop, the Olympics.
Wow I can’t enter this one. Guy is so good its amazing. The person that wins this is amazing.
this really is a lame idea. nobody needs to see this to realize that guy’s part was amazing. let sleeping dogs lie.
this is an outrage. u dont think anybody should try to copy the magic of this part. its dishonorable if u ask me
Well, obviously I do think people should try to copy it, hence the contest. I don’t think it’s dishonorable, I think it’s honorable. A lot of kids don’t even know the Mouse video exists, and the point of the contest is to bring attention to Guy’s part and help people understand how amazing it is. If there was actually a chance that anybody could do a decent job of copying his part then we might have a problem on our hands, but I seriously doubt anybody will come close.
So what are you worried about? If you have something against this idea then try and explain your point of view, rather than just saying “this is lame.”
Wooooow i love Guy.. he’s one of the sickest of our time, im glad he’s on lakai….I so can’t wait until fully flared, Eric Koston has been my fave since i found out what a skateboard was
the front shuv crook on the rail wasn’t in his part, it was i n the credits
That’s why I specifically said people have to do that trick too.
the biggest for of flattery is imitation. knock of the soul skater bs its just a fun contest. guy has probably one of the greatest styles skatebooarding has ever seen…and im psyched someone is really focusing in on honoring his skill…people are to busy looking at how many stairs people are doing what down…but guy he just skated the streets like they were supposed to.
i THINK i may bave a chance. lol would it be funny if we used those old vx1s ( not vx1000) with the ghetto fisheye that takes up half of the screen??? that would add to it so much
Worst idea ever. I don’t want to watch some schmuck imitate Guy’s part. It will never, ever be as good. It makes me sick reading about this.contest. This contest is like making a Reggaeton remix of a Beatles song: it just shouldn’t be done. Please don’t do this.
I think you’re missing the point of the contest. Of course nobody’s going to do as good of a job as Guy. But if anybody could come close it probably would be fun to watch, but nobody’s forcing you to watch anything. Like nolove said above, it’s about fun and it’s about honoring one of the greats. Lighten up.
good luck finding the spots in his part
one of the best parts ever. i got no beef with someone trying to copy it, but as was said above, if you can even get in the ballpark of the amazingness that is this part you’re probably already hooked up and it’s probably not worth your while. you could release this part in a current vid and it would be better than most anything else filmed currently.
but good luck nonetheless!
Apparently Sanger from Crailtap gave us a link today. Thanks Sanger.
Guess I spoke too soon. Looks like we’ve got links from The Skateboard Mag (yes, you do deserve more than $1K if you can pull it off, but somebody other than me is going to have to start pitching in), Lakai, and some others. Thanks guys.
Let’s Put it this way ….has anyone ever done a Ollie ….has any one ever done a rail …Hmmmm has anyone ever droped in on a mini ramp ….i guess the you are all saying yes ….now lets see has anyone ever watched a video …seen a trick and spent the next day busting your a$$ to try and learn it ….we all have …since the bones brigade video show to now …..we have all copied tricks and had the bigest respect to the person that first showed you . Take this comp …do the best you can and show the respect to the person (ie Guy ) that he deserves. We have all copied someone to get were we are now ….and if i was Guy seeing all these people loving what i did …then you have showen the respect to the man that we all wish at some stage in our lives we have showen to us.
I don’t understand why anyone is upset about this. No harm comes out of it. I think it’s a cool idea, but I doubt many people will enter.
Good #@$@in luck $#%$$. Sweet idea. Noone will come close.
O yeah I’m going to try this, I can do a lot of those tricks, I’m on it.
42 clips wow, I’m gonna need a month or so
to all the “nobody can copy Guy’s trick or style”, remember the brand A-Team? They did the same thing years ago, each of their pros had to throw a trick and the kid who can do it will receive money (that was pretty impressive at that time!) well Rodney was in and put something like kickflip nose wheeling nollie tre out… well guess who won at that time and stayed undercover for years…. Chris Cole!
Think about it kids….
Pro footballers, basketball players, so called artists ect. you are overpaid and underskilled. It is just absurd how #$@#’ing good this part will always be.
I I <3 Guy’s skating. I think this contest is rad. I’m gonna be happy if I get one of Guy’s tricks in his Mouse part. If I constantly skated as fast as he does, im stoked. Ya feel me?
great idea. obviously nobody is gonna be able to touch guys part with a 10 foot pole, but seeing people try will be a great test.
I thought the emulation of Guys part has been tried by many?
Brian Wenning,Anthony Papalardo,Lucas Puig.
Obviously a suspicious amount of inspiration was taken by such skaters.
Sorry but no one can @#$# with Mr Mariano!
Switch Backside nosegrind revert on a rail is just bananas?
If anyone can show me that one then I’ll throw in a G.
Even if someone duplicates one trick - it’s the steez that can never be duplicated. It’s like Guy leaves his DNA on the trick. He makes pushing a skateboard look good! A true sign of a skateboarding genius. I am too lame to make enough time to get on my skate as much but I still check the tap and am impatiently waiting to see Guy’s part in the Lakai vid, heck I would even just buy his board to look at it and anticiapte the times to come. ok enough of the butt kissing
The only thing thats “lame” about this contest is some people complaining about how lame idea this is… if you think this is lame, please feel free and keep doing whatever you think is more “cool”, and let other people have a bit of fun for pete’s sake!
I think this is a really brilliant idea, as was the A-team campaign years ago. Since the A-team campaign didn´t take skateboarding to the olympics in the past, Im sure that this competition will not do it either.
Even if you come close to to this run ….i’m sure there’s more than one company that would open there eye’s to you ….look at the big picture people ….exposure ….get your face out there and start compeating with the animals . All the lame people ….you just keep skating your local park ….complaing about this and that ….going home after a session …picking up a magazine and and thinking to yourself ….gee i wish i could be pro ……
Sorry Guys …i have to post again …on looking at the big picture take this comp for starters …here is a way to show case what you have got …you may not win ….who cares ….but for instance some one from X company might see you and start flowing you some shoes …your stoked …so you start skating harder ….there going to keep a eye on you …your getting better so hey here come some decks …cool …so you push the limits some more ….next up hey want to come on a short demo trip around your state ..( more exposure ) …getting up there ….what’s up next …national demo trip …Full product Flow ….Full Sponsership …Household name . You have to start small to grow big …Very little people go from nothing to full sponsership straight up ….you have to work for things in life . So the more oppertunities that are put up ..grab them. Like this comp it’s going to cost you nothing but time ….
This just got posted on Crailtap’s randoms. “I probably couldn’t do it.”–Guy talking about the recreate Guy’s video part contest.
Personally, I don’t know about that. Based on what I’ve seen Guy pulling down lately I think he could take himself on and do pretty well. Good thing he’s disqualified from entering the contest. That’s not an official rule up above, but I’m making it right now.
well, yeah you can’t have him remake the part if he made the original
as for the contest, its bad-a, i think it’s a grand idea and hope that someday i’ll have half the skill guy had.
How about just changing it a bit and see if anyone can duplicate his part in goldfish instead.
And make sure Koston isnt eligible cause he is a pretty goos akter and half thai, and thais the best cop catters in the world
I know a guy that could do it. Justin Guillen. Check out the “Like Brothers” video, his part in that alone is a crazy one…sw crook fakie big flip out on a bank to bench!
I wanna see Guy himself try it though….i say he kills it…
Here’s what Wu Welsh has to say about this contest:
“…come one…that’s pretty retarded.”
Rob’s just bitter because as a sponsoree of a Girl-related company he’s ineligible. C’mon, Rob, lighten up, it’s just for fun!
I don’t think they’re taking this serious. Might have to bump it up a few more thousand to really get this going. When Guy’s part came out, a $1000 was a lot and just about every kid would be hyped on 1G. But today… I dunno… kids seem to need way more incentives. It’s unfortunate, but it’s kind of the truth.
Stay your ground though - they’ll start filming.
Yeah, well, that’s what I’ve got. We need to get the folks at Crailtap to sponsor this sucka and kick in some product or something.
i think its a great idea. no one’s gonna steal guy’s magic or even come close. its about recognizing his acomplishments.
hey man, if that don’t work how about getting 100 people to do one of each of his different tricks so its more like a tribute? there could be other pros or whoever and people would only have to do one trick and not dedicate a year to it. put it together to watermelon man and its on.
just a thought. i hate it when people take an idea i have and tell me a different way to do it so i’ll shut up now.
See, now that’s some constructive thinking. Thanks Ron. BTW, I’ve been a fan of yours ever since the Sims video.
I would be able to do a lot of the tricks from the part, but dont have time to travel to the spots where Guy did them. Also, his style is untouchable.
Just following up - I had remembered this contest the other day and wanted to check in.
No submissions yet, although I would be amazed if anybody had managed to put together half of Guy’s part in the time since this contest began.
is this contest still going ? 1000 dollars is awesome but how would this be paid ?
It’s still going but nobody has submitted a video yet (submit videos by posting a link here in the comments–if you email me links to videos I won’t look at them).
Payment is either by check or by pennies stored in 5-gallon water bottles, your choice.
