Pat Duffy. Great Skateboarder, Not the Greatest Interviewer.

Plan B is posting a ton of great video these days and I hope they keep it up. Just go to their website and click on “Plan B TV”. The latest is part 1 of an interview with Matt Hensley. The trouble is that it’s mostly Pat gushing about how much he loves Matt and actually interrupting Matt when Matt is trying to answer questions. Don’t get me wrong, I love Pat, I just think he needs to work a little on his interviewing technique. So here are a few tips that somebody who knows Pat can pass on to him in a loving yet firm way:

1. Don’t interrupt the guy you’re interviewing.

2. Ask one question at a time.

3. Ask open-ended questions (How did you feel when such and such happened?) not yes/no questions (Wasn’t that great when such and such happened? Answer: Yes, Result = Boring).

4. Take it easy. We all love Matt Hensley, and it’s fun to see that Pat feels the same way about Matt as I do, but I really am more interested in what Matt has to say about Matt than in hearing Pat get so excited about talking about Matt.

5. Watch O’Dell. He does a great job on the interviews.

6. Don’t touch your cell phone when someone’s answering your question.

Good luck Pat, we love you and pray for your success as an interviewer.

I was thinking the same thing about Pat’s interviewing skills. He could definitely use some improvement but I loved watching the interviews still the same.

Haha, not the greatest interview technique I’ve seen. Great blokes though

Good interview tips! I think pat just needs to stick to skating and drop the whole interview thing, I hate when skateboard mags or sites/videos try to do weird interviews like this, it pains me to watch.
