Free Quiksilver DVD

You can’t complain about getting a free DVD with your December 2005 issue of The Skateboard Mag, but you can sure criticize it. This beauty features the skating of Reese Forbes, Omar Hassan, Tony Hawk, Christian Hosoi (two clips, but hey), Stefan Janoski, Kyle Leeper, Tim O’Connor, Arto Saari, Bastien Salabanzi, Eric Fletcher, Dylan Rieder, and Omar Salazar.

There is some pretty good footage in here, and that’s what makes it worth it. However, some of the footage is too artsy, and I don’t mean like an Alien Workshop video, I mean like when major TV network people who know nothing about skateboarding edit video. Choppy footage may be artsy, but it’s also really annoying for those who are trying to enjoy the skate footage. If you’re marketing towards non-skaters (which is what Quiksilver does quite well) then it’s ok, but if you’re marketing towards skateboarders it’s a turn-off.

Then there’s the matter of the DVD being pretty short. Oh yeah, it’s free, but still, I bet they could have rounded up more footage than appears on this. I would have put about twice as much on there, but I’m greedy that way.

I think Quiksilver’s main problem with skateboarders is going to be trying to convert them to liking pink and purple. Their main problem with teenage girls will be getting them to like Dylan Rieder with short hair.

My main criticism of Quiksilver’s marketing towards skateboarders is that they seem to be trying to get skateboarders to be more like surfers in terms of dress, color preferences, and hanging out at the beach.

But more than that, I just think Quiksilver should stay out of skateboarding, and skaters should stay out of Quiksilver. I’ve got nothing against Quiksilver as a surfwear company, but I don’t want them to do to skateboarding what has been done to surfing. It’s already too close for comfort when I run into some kid wearing eS shoes, Matix jeans, and an Independent t-shirt and I ask him “Oh, do you skate?” and he says “No, I just like the clothes.” Buying Quiksilver’s skate clothing is just going to increase how fast this happens.

And is it just me, or has Arto put on a few pounds?

Its funny how right now Adsense has placed a Quicksilver Clothing add on your site. I agree with you on how Quicksilver should stay out of skateboarding, its a whole different much more larger world than surfing and for them to think they can try and make skaters become stereotypical surfers is a mistake.
